An auction for a Chautauqua County gauze back RWS strip recently ended on eBay, and it certainly caught my eye!
As you can see, the patch sold for over $ 2800.00
You can see the auction, by clicking on the image.
There were four unique bidders on this one, each bidding the above the $ 1850.00 minimum bid.
Why was it worth so much? From the auction text.
According to the Council Shoulder Insignia guidebook, this is an “original style RWS” where the council name was embroidered onto a blank that already contained the word “COUNCIL”. Â Also, the word COUNCIL is wider than the 64 mm seen on most RWS – it’s closer to 70 mm. Â This is why the council name is in a more crude block-style lettering and is partially gauze-backed. Â All of the “original style” RWS are rare because they were made in extremely limited numbers. Â This issue must surely be among the rarest because it does not appear to be listed in the 2009 book as a known issue.
